You may recall my article “The Forecast in Decor Calls for Brighter Colors in 2022” in which I admit may have seemed unusual since I normally don’t jump on trends. However, to my surprise, I received a lot of positive emails about the article being fun to read and also informative. So, with 2023 on the horizon, I decided to do an update with “Announcing The Colors of the Year for 2023”.
As I emphasized in the article, if you’re an artist whose clients are decorators, designers, and architects this topic may be of interest to you. Furthermore, as many art collectors search for ways to update their decors every year having this information could be useful. It’s also interesting if you’re selling your art to new home owners.
Although I generally object to “trends” I see nothing wrong with keeping abreast of market sector forecasts. It’s helpful for you to be aware of what interior designers, corporate art consultants and other art professionals are considering when they select art for their art projects and clients.
After all, knowledge is power, right? And I’m sure you agree there is power in color.
You may be interested to know that the two leading home paint experts that interior designers go to are Benjamin Moore and Sherwin-Williams. Their marketing professionals have knowledge, experience and ideas that can be valuable to you to increase your art sales.
I want to be clear, I don’t recommend that you create art solely with the purpose of matching with the current colors in fashion. However, if you have already created art that is compatible with the current colors, it might be fun and empowering to know this. And, if your favorite palette happens to concur with the color broadcasters, why not join forces!
If you share my love and curiosity for color and sense for playful creativity, I hope you enjoy seeing what I put together for you in this article. Let me know.
Benjamin Moore’s Color Choice for 2023
Benjamin Moore has chosen Raspberry Blush — a vivid red-orange — as its Color of the Year 2023. According to the color enthusiasts, this color is a combination of coral, pink, red, orange, raspberry and blush tones. These hues will perk up any wall or flooring.
On the Benjamin Moore website you’ll find such adjectives as “charismatic”, “playful and saturated”. They proclaim, Raspberry Blush is “a vivacious shade”, that “enlivens the senses with an electric optimism.” We could all use that, don’t you agree?
I decided to search my image storage bank of art by famous artists and pair them with the new Benjamin Moore Color of the Year. Here’s what I came up with.
Sherwin-Williams Color Choice for 2023
Sherwin-Williams has selected Redend Point — “a warm and joyful neutral” — for its Color of the Year 2023. The color is referred to as “minimal yet cozy.” Sue Wadden, director of color marketing at Sherwin-Williams states, “It is a heartening hue that invites compassion and connection into any space.” Those words inspire me and bring to mind what the world needs now.
Wadden also shares, “The color is a natural choice for those looking for a warm and joyful neutral in both interiors and exteriors. It creates a comforting backdrop for the everyday moments that matter.”
Here are my choices for art by famous artists that may be compatible with Redend Point, even if only a hint of the color can be detected in the work of art.
I hope this exercise in color gave you some ideas that you can add to your art marketing tool box. And, the next time you speak to an interior designer and point to your art that has shades of “Raspberry Blush” or “Redend Point” you’ll have something lively to discuss.
