The Influence of Architectural Design on The Art Market

By Renee Phillips 3 Comments

When was the last time you thought about how trends in architecture influence art buying decisions? The more you know about this industry the better. Why? Because there is a direct correlation between architectural design changes and the purchasing decisions made by corporate art buyers, private collectors, project managers, public art planners, and other major professionals. If you want to sell more of your artwork now and in the future, one way may be to keep abreast of the important influence of architectural design on the art market.

Trends

Architecture is an exciting field that responds to and reflects our dramatically changing environment and social development. As one of many examples, there is a growing trend in combining interior and exterior elements — bringing the outdoors inside. Plants are a popular addition to décor and artwork that is nature-inspired is gaining more attention than ever. Furthermore, the lines are being blurred to the extent that we’re seeing office spaces popping up in parks where pods are wrapped around tree trucks.

There are other trends to be aware of. New materials, substrates, energy efficient green spaces and other environmental factors are playing a huge role. There is also a growing use of dynamic geometric patterns, texture, rhythm, and repetition in interiors. There are homes and buildings that change from day to night, embracing illumination as an architectural element, using LED and other lighting effects.

Multi-media is also making an impact. Today, there are many studies in which color and sound waves provide healing therapy. As a result, hospitals and other healthcare facilities and rehabilitation centers are integrating the technology of light and sound systems to provide awe-inspiring art experiences and maximize healing benefits.

Are You An Artist Who Embraces Innovation?

If you’re an artist who embraces innovation, futuristic and visionary ideas, get inspired! Create art that you love and fills the demand for work that complements and harmonizes with these new and revised living and working spaces. Seek out affluent buyers who are seeking innovative art that matches their aesthetic design preferences!

In response to the need to understand more about the impact of architectural design,  The Metropolitan Museum hosted “In Our Time: A Year of Architecture in a Day”, an all-day symposium devoted to the most exciting and critical design projects.  Architects, curators, theorists, photographers, and filmmakers presented their ideas on a range of international projects. Structured into three parts—Architecture on Display, Projects of the Year, and On the Horizon—the daylong program constructed a global view of contemporary architectural practice.

Going Global
Keep in mind, these architectural design movements are taking place on a global scale. You’ll begin to notice more inventions within art and design as time progresses. So, explore the many possibilities in texture, color, and multi-media that you can integrate in your art!

Color and design trends tend to be cyclical, whether it be architecture, fashion, furniture or other consumer goods. Architects, designers and artists have a wealth of information at their fingertips in this modern age. With a world wide web the exchange of information and ideas is literally at light speed.

Excellent and very relevant article, Renee. There is no question that art selection is greatly influenced by interior design and architectural trends. The challenge is to remain true to one’s artistic style and vision and not keep swerving to chase the latest trend. Keeping a balance between innovation and awareness of market trends while maintaining a sense of continuity in one’s work. Much to consider.
