Writing About Your Abstract Art

By Renee Phillips 2 Comments

Most artists I know find writing artist’s statements very difficult. One might agree that for artists who work in the style of realism, it is an easier task to communicate their inspiration because they are dealing with tangible and natural references. However, if you’re an abstract artist the challenges are very different.

How do you convey to others how you feel when choosing your colors, shapes, forms and techniques?

What is the origin(s) of your inspiration?

Are you propelled by a purposeful intention?

How do you use your medium in a special way to express yourself in an abstract manner?

The myriad of internal, intangible forces may be difficult to articulate. For this article I provide excerpts from Art Reviews I have written about different abstract artists. I hope these examples offer some guidance when writing about your abstract art.

I love to write about art and artists. If you would like me to write an Art Review in which I write about the strengths and unique qualities about your art, visit this page.

Rohit Shah Captures the Allure of Infinity

As a versatile artist in both painting and sculpture, Rohit Shah has an expansive portfolio of abstract art that comprises a range of vistas – from ethereal and evanescent, dreamlike and transcendent, to bold, intense, richly textured and sculptural.

Rohit captures sublime atmospheric qualities of the natural realm. His multiple transparent layers in oil paint illuminate the timeless, mercurial and transient world we inhabit.

A powerful rhythm reverberates within this environment of luminous spatial depth. The energy awakens our spiritual thoughts and serves as a meditative, reflective experience.

Rohit’s superb command of chromatic and tonal scales and the use of complementary colors evoke a range of visceral responses.

Shirley Wallitsch Creates A Vibrant and Rhythmic Medley

Shirley Wallitsch exudes an infectious and unbridled enthusiasm and shares her affinity with the natural world. Her oil paintings emanate a resounding vibrant medley of rhythmic forms. As a color virtuoso she has mastered a treasure trove of chromatic and tonal ranges.

Her expansive artistic vision is enhanced by her skillful use of stylistic expressions, gestural painting methods, different methods including splatters and mark-making. She delightfully embraces aspects of Realism, Impressionism and Abstraction.  She creates a visual dynamic interplay of harmonies, contrasts, and synchronicity.

Marianne Goldyn is a self-professed “soul catalyst, ancestor tender, storyteller, scribe and artist”. As a unique contemporary visionary, her creativity is fueled by a myriad of healing modalities and her extensive knowledge about the physical, mental and spiritual aspects of human experience.

Marianne uses photography, drawing, and digital formats to create intuitive images. Her expert use of symbolic imagery emphasizes the concept we are in an ongoing dynamic interaction with the universe. Her art is a strong reminder that we are related to each other across time and space, and have a connection with our ancestors, as well as the animal, plant and mineral kingdoms.

Steevie Jane Parks Unites the Healing Dynamics of Colors and Forms

Steevie Jane Parks creates awe-inspiring, multi-layered abstract paintings. Biomorphic elements also enliven many of Steevie’s paintings. However, they transcend their physical details in favor of illuminating their intrinsic essence. Her animated references to patterns from the natural world are often inspired by painting en plein air.

She is highly proficient in applying the dynamics of color theory and integrates a range of hues with organic and curvilinear elements.

The mesmerizing glowing forms conjure visions of stained glass and kaleidoscopes.

Poul Nielsen Creates Ethereal Color Field Paintings

Verde
Atmospheric Probabilities (Verde), pastel on paper, 30” x 22”

Poul Nielsen a masterful contemporary Color Field artist. His juxtaposition of horizontal bands of colors suggests a harmonious continuum, balance, and infinite space. He satiates our yearning for tranquility and quietude.

His light-filled prairie surroundings in Canada and trips to Peru with its vibrant heritage have served as inspiration for his palette which he infuses with the knowledge of the emotive and neurological impact colors have on us.

In his carefully planned compositions, he manages his space as an energizing vibrational force, which imbues his art with a powerful healing modality.

Eva Breitfuß Transports Us and Raises Consciousness

Eva Breitfuss is a contemporary artist whose paintings transport us on an enthralling, multi-dimensional, visceral journey of transcendent self-discovery.

A profusion of abstract styles culminates in her versatile artistic vocabulary. She orchestrates minimal and reductive imagery and open spaces as well as geometric shapes, detailed designs, and intricate compositions. Every line, color and shape she chooses reflects a purposeful intention to communicate conceptual breadth and depth.

Eva lures us into spacious orbits, curvilinear forms, concentric circles, undulating waves and crossing directional lines. Her images release an exalted crescendo and emanate a profound vibrational energy.

Was happy to see Michael Amrose’s input. I love his work. Bought one several years ago and still ‘am in love’. Brings out a lot of meditative and spiritual feelings.
